Why am I studying Japanese?

I've always loved the way the Japanese language sounds, the interesting and very foreign (from a Western perspective) social customs, the pop culture, and also the food! I've wanted to take Japanese for a really long time after hearing friends talk to their families in Japanese, and I'm glad I can finally start. The hardest part so far has probably been memorizing so much vocabulary, and we have not even started learning kanji or katakana. But I am looking forward to learning more about all the grammar structures and particles in Japanese, I think the grammar we've learned so far is so interesting and different from what I know.

I'm also interested in exploring more about Japanese social customs and history. Japan has in the past had difficult relations with countries like China and Korea, and I think the relationship between these countries is important to learn more about. I hope one day to be able to travel to Japan myself and learn more about the country's culture and history and improve my language skills!

  1. I think it's really interesting that one of the reasons you're learning Japanese is to understand more about Japanese customs and history, as a way of understanding the bigger context of East Asian history. I agree that learning the vocal can be difficult, but I'm sure you're doing well! I hope you really get to achieve the goals that you've set for Japanese this year :)

  2. Bonjour Alice! I also think it's been quite difficult learning all this vocab so quickly. Personally I find the particles more difficult. You're write we haven't even learned much kanji or katakana yet, that will for sure be difficult. I think it's really cool that you want to learn more about East Asian history and geopolitics, it's also one of the reasons I chose to take Japanese. It's great that you want to improve your language skills and travel to Japan, see you there!

I agree about the hardest part being memorizing everything but it is fun because we are learning a lot. Also, I love your blog name!
